I recently came across some great smartphone apps that can evaluate your Chinese pronunciation quality. Pronunciation is absolutely crucial in Mandarin, especially because it is a tonal language. But without a teacher or native Mandarin Chinese speaker, it is hard to know if you are pronouncing words correctly. This article talks about the best free smartphone apps which can evaluate your Chinese pronunciation.

Chinese Pronunciation Corrector

This app allows you to input any Chinese text, which is amazing, and it can pronounce it for you. The app also gives you the option to record yourself saying that text, and then it will give you a score of 0 to 100 based on how well you spoke it.

This app does not give you the Pinyin of the characters, but the speaker will say any series of Chinese characters you input. The app has a small list of vocabulary to choose from if you don’t want to paste in various Chinese words or sentences to practice speaking with. This app is available in both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.

This app, is somewhat similar to Chinese Pronunciation Corrector, but there are a few differences. First it starts out with English sentences. Then, you think of what the translation into Chinese could be. Afterwards, the app shows you an appropriate translation into Chinese. Then, you can choose to see the Chinese Characters of the translation and can also choose to see the translation’s transliteration into Pinyin if you want.

Later, you can record your own voice speaking the Chinese translation, and it will evaluate how accurate your pronunciation was. This app won’t give you a numeral score for how accurate your pronunciation was. But, based on how well you spoke, it will say words like “great”, “Ideal!”, for good pronunciation or “I’m sorry” for very poor pronunciation, and several other words for fair pronunciation. This app only allows you to go through it’s list of sentences to listen to and pronounce. It will not let you paste in a generic sentence like Chinese Pronunciation Corrector. This app is available in the Google Play Store.
